about

This album was tracked through a Neve console onto a 16 track 2" AMPEX tape machine and then mixed down in analog to 1/2" tape. We used very little compression and virtually no transistor-based gear. All reverb was achieved through an outboard EMT which is a marvelous technology but can be a little temperamental.

All songs were recorded live and in most instances we used first takes. Vocals were doubled on many of the songs which was achieved by tracking multiple takes and simply playing them back simultaneously - very old school and very cool. Beats a software plug-in any day of the week.

Mastering was overseen by Trutone Mastering Labs in Nyack, NY utilizing a Neumann mastering console, a Fairchild 670 outboard compressor and a Sontec MES 431 parametric EQ in order to balance out the overall tonality. With the exception of some de-essing, everything on the album is as it was played & recorded.

It was a great experience to keep this project analog which is irrefutably a far superior sound than digital, but does inject a different kind of uncertainty since machines have a tendency to break at inopportune moments.
